Thiruvananthapuram: The government health insurance scheme Medisep, which provides coverage for government employees and pensioners, is set to continue under the existing contract beyond its original expiry date of June 30, 2025. Rather than initiating a fresh tender process for a new contract, authorities have decided to extend the current agreement for an additional year due to delays in finalizing a replacement.
An expert committee led by Sreeram Venkittaraman recently submitted its recommendations to revamp the scheme. Among the key proposals are raising the monthly premium from ₹500 to ₹750 and introducing slab-based premiums tied to salary levels. The committee also pointed out that the current Medisep benefits lag behind similar central government and private insurance schemes, urging improvements in treatment packages.
Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal has approved the expert panel’s suggestions, with the finance department expected to study the recommendations carefully before implementing them. Meanwhile, the extension ensures continuity of medical benefits for thousands of government employees and pensioners without disruption.
