Kerala Catholic Church Marks World Environment Day with Tree Planting Ceremony at POC Headquarters

Kochi: The Palarivattom-based Pastoral Orientation Centre (POC), the central administrative hub of the Kerala Catholic Church, observed World Environment Day with a meaningful act of environmental stewardship. The event, organized with the theme of ecological responsibility, was led by the KCBC Youth Commission and emphasized the Church’s commitment to sustainable living and climate consciousness.

The highlight of the occasion was the ceremonial planting of a tree sapling in the POC premises. This symbolic act was performed by Bishop Dr. R. Christudas, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Thiruvananthapuram and Chairman of the KCBC Youth Commission. In his brief address, Bishop Christudas underscored the moral responsibility of individuals and communities—especially faith-based institutions—to protect creation and promote environmental justice.

The event was graced by the presence of several prominent clergy, including POC Director Fr. Thomas Tharayil, Fr. Jacob Prasad, Fr. Tony Kozhimannil, Fr. Martin Thattil, and Fr. Ditto Coola. Members of the POC staff also participated in the celebration, lending their support to the initiative.

In line with Pope Francis' encyclical Laudato Si’, which calls for urgent action to protect the planet, the POC’s Environment Day observance served as both a symbolic and practical reminder of the Church’s ecological mission. Participants committed to continuing green efforts throughout the year, including awareness drives, clean-up campaigns, and afforestation programs spearheaded by various Catholic institutions in the state.

The event concluded with prayers and reflections on humanity’s duty to preserve the Earth for future generations, reinforcing the Church’s message that care for the environment is integral to faith and service.
