Ahmedabad: In a devastating turn of events, Air India Flight AI171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner en route from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff this afternoon. Authorities now report that all 241 people aboard have perished, with no survivors expected.
The aircraft lifted off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at around 1:38 PM IST but lost contact moments later. Police Commissioner G.S. Malik confirmed the grim outcome, stating, “It appears there are no survivors in the plane crash,” adding that, tragically, some local residents in the residential Meghani Nagar area also lost their lives.
Emergency crews, including firefighters, ambulance teams, and NDRF personnel, descended on the crash site immediately. More than 200 bodies have been recovered so far, amid glimpses of thick black smoke rising from the wreckage . The plane's impact struck a doctors' hostel at B.J. Medical College, where some 60 students were reportedly present.
Rescue operations are still underway, but all indications point to a total loss of life aboard the aircraft and in the surrounding area. Authorities have suspended airport operations temporarily and launched a comprehensive investigation, focusing on possible mechanical failure or configuration errors.
