Pope Leo XIV Urges Environmental Action: ‘A New Direction Is Urgently Needed’

Vatican City: In a passionate appeal to the youth of France, Pope Leo XIV has called for a radical change in how humanity relates to the environment, urging the young generation to embrace ecological responsibility and spiritual renewal. The Pope’s message was addressed to thousands of French scouts and guides gathered at the “Clameurs” Rally in Jambville, which concluded today.

Calling the present moment one of “urgent reckoning,” Pope Leo warned of the deepening ecological crisis and emphasized that humanity must respond as a united force. “The environmental devastation we are witnessing weighs heavily on our collective conscience,” he wrote. “There is an urgency that calls all of humanity to act not tomorrow, but today.”

The five-day “Clameurs” gathering focused on building a more just and sustainable world, with youth engaging in workshops, prayers, and discussions aimed at combating climate change and promoting social equity. Pope Leo praised their mission, saying, “This is not just a rally; it is a turning point. You are planting seeds of change.”

The Pope drew attention to not just the loss of biodiversity or pollution, but also the growing inequality that accompanies the ecological breakdown. “There are still many without clean water or access to energy,” he noted. “These are not distant problems. They are signs of a planet that is not being cared for and of people being left behind.”

According to the Holy Father, what is needed is more than just technical solutions. “We need ecological education education that shapes the heart as much as the mind. A change in lifestyle, in mindset, in habits. And that requires interior conversion.”

The Pope reminded the scouts that their outdoor lifestyle, grounded in nature and simplicity, equips them with a unique awareness. “You live close to the Earth, you respect creation, and you share in games, craftsmanship, and night vigils under the stars. That experience is sacred. It teaches reverence for God’s work.”

He urged them to take these values beyond the campgrounds. “Be ambassadors of fraternity and peace,” he said, encouraging them to break down cultural barriers and build bridges of understanding and cooperation. “Your differences whether cultural, generational, or personal—are not weaknesses. They are strengths. Together, you can imagine a new world shaped by truth, justice, and the Gospel of peace.”

For those receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation during the rally, the Pope highlighted their special calling. “The Holy Spirit is not a distant idea. He is a divine presence that strengthens, enlightens, and guides. Your Confirmation is not an ending it is a beginning. It gives you the power to be courageous disciples of Christ, living witnesses of faith and love.”

He also reminded the young faithful that discipleship means becoming agents of transformation. “The world needs your hope. It needs your voices. It needs your prayers. Be the generation that does not accept indifference. Be the ones who show that faith is not silence, but witness.”

In closing, Pope Leo offered a message of encouragement and conviction: “Do not give in to discouragement. You are each uniquely created and personally loved by the Lord. Never stop believing in a better world a world shaped by the civilization of love. May you become the bridge-builders between generations, peoples, and cultures.”

With this message, the Pope reaffirmed the Church’s deep commitment to ecological justice, spiritual renewal, and youth empowerment trusting the next generation to lead the way with courage, compassion, and Christ-centered hope.
