Melbourne Mourns the Loss of Bishop Peter Elliott, A Life Rooted in Faith and Service

Melbourne: The Archdiocese of Melbourne is mourning the passing of Bishop Emeritus Peter John Elliott, who died peacefully on August 6, 2025, at the age of 81. Widely known for his deep devotion to Christ, his commitment to the Church, and his pastoral warmth, Bishop Elliott’s death marks the end of a remarkable chapter in Australian Catholic history.

Born in Melbourne on October 1, 1943, Peter Elliott was the son of Anglican minister Leslie Llewellyn Elliott and Irene Ann (June) Rooke. After completing his education at Melbourne Grammar School and obtaining a Master of Arts in History from the University of Melbourne, he went on to study theology at the University of Oxford, where he embraced the Catholic faith.

He entered priestly formation at Corpus Christi College, Glen Waverley, and was ordained to the priesthood on February 19, 1973, by Cardinal Lawrence Shehan during the 40th International Eucharistic Congress in Melbourne. His ministry soon gained recognition for its intellectual depth, liturgical elegance, and pastoral sensitivity.

In April 2007, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as Auxiliary Bishop of Melbourne and Titular Bishop of Manaccenser. He was consecrated on June 15, 2007, and served in the role until his retirement in 2018. Despite retiring, Bishop Elliott remained actively involved in teaching, writing, and supporting the local Church community.

Archbishop Peter A. Comensoli of Melbourne paid tribute to Bishop Elliott, describing him as a pastor, teacher, and friend whose love for Christ and the Church guided every step of his ministry. He praised Elliott’s rare combination of theological depth and human compassion, noting that he brought a profound sense of the sacred and a tireless commitment to proclaiming the Gospel.

Bishop Elliott was particularly revered for his contributions to catechesis and liturgy. His ability to communicate Church teachings with clarity and beauty left a lasting impression on both clergy and laity. He was also known for his care for families, wise counsel, and gentle wit.

In his final years, Bishop Elliott lived at Justin Villa Aged Residential Care in Balwyn, where he continued to be a source of wisdom and spiritual strength to those around him.

Funeral details will be announced by the Archdiocese in the coming days. The faithful are invited to pray for the repose of his soul and to remember the legacy of a man whose life was a shining testament to faith, service, and love.
