Syria’s Christian Children Receive Lifeline Through “A Drop of Milk” Campaign

Aleppo, Syria: Amid ongoing challenges of war and economic instability, Christian children in Aleppo, Syria, are receiving critical nutritional support through the “A Drop of Milk” campaign, launched by the Pontifical Foundation Aid to the Church in Need (ACN). The initiative, running since 2015, focuses on providing powdered milk and infant formula to children under the age of ten from displaced or impoverished Christian families.

Each month, the program distributes milk to around 3,000 children, including 250 infants who receive specialized formula. In 2018 alone, the campaign delivered 40 tons of milk, highlighting its wide-reaching impact on vulnerable communities.

In Syria’s current economic climate, a single can of milk costs roughly 3,000 Syrian pounds, while the average monthly salary is about 30,000 pounds. This makes it extremely difficult for families to afford essential nutrition for their children. The program has therefore become a vital support system for families struggling to meet basic needs.

Georgina, a mother of three, shared how her daughters Myriam, 10, and Pamela, 6, have benefited from the campaign. Pamela, who suffered injuries from bomb shrapnel, relies on the monthly supply of milk to regain strength and aid her recovery. Georgina emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating that it is essential for the wellbeing of her family.

Despite its success, the program faces ongoing funding challenges. Dr. Nabil Antaki, a key coordinator, has urged ACN and the international community for continued support to maintain the distribution.

Donations can be made through the ACN official website, enabling supporters worldwide to provide critical assistance to children in need. The campaign remains a vital lifeline, not only offering nourishment but also hope for a brighter future for Syria’s Christian children.
