Pope Leo XIV Offers Prayers and Condolences Following Lisbon Funicular Tragedy

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV has extended his heartfelt condolences and spiritual support to the victims and families affected by the tragic funicular accident in Lisbon, which claimed at least 17 lives and left dozens injured.

In a telegram addressed to Cardinal Rui Manuel Sousa Valério, Patriarch of Lisbon, the Pope conveyed his “deepest sympathy” to the bereaved families, assuring them of his “spiritual closeness” during this time of profound grief. The message, signed by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin on the Pope’s behalf, prayed for “the complete recovery of the injured” and invoked “the strength of Christian hope for all those affected by this disaster.”

The Holy Father also expressed “special gratitude to the brave individuals involved in the rescue operations” and imparted his “Apostolic Blessing” to the victims, their families, and the community impacted by the tragedy.

Authorities in Lisbon confirmed that the accident involved the historic “Elevador da Gloria” funicular, one of the city’s iconic streetcars. Witnesses reported that the vehicle appeared to have lost control as it descended a steep hill during evening rush hour, ultimately overturning and striking pedestrians along the way. Portuguese officials have described the incident as one of the most devastating in the city’s recent history.

A total of 21 people were injured, including both Portuguese citizens and international visitors. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the accident, although the funicular’s operating company stated that all scheduled maintenance had been completed prior to the crash.

The Pope’s message reflects the Vatican’s longstanding practice of offering solidarity and spiritual support in times of tragedy, emphasizing both compassion for the suffering and gratitude for those who rush to aid the victims. As Lisbon grapples with the aftermath, the global Catholic community joins in prayer for healing and consolation.
