Yemen reels from Israeli airstrikes, 35 killed and global calls for sanctions grow

Sanaa: At least 35 people were killed and more than 130 injured after Israeli warplanes launched multiple airstrikes on Yemen’s capital Sanaa and the northern al-Jawf province, intensifying a wave of regional escalation.

The strikes late Wednesday targeted Houthi military camps, a propaganda headquarters, and a fuel storage facility, according to the Israeli military, which said the operation was in retaliation for recent drone and missile attacks by Houthi forces, including one that struck Ramon Airport in southern Israel.

Local officials and witnesses reported that residential areas, government offices, and even a medical facility were hit, leaving many civilians among the victims. Rescue efforts continued through Thursday as damaged buildings were cleared of rubble.

The Houthi-run health ministry confirmed the casualty figures, accusing Israel of deliberately targeting civilian infrastructure. The group also claimed its air defenses engaged Israeli aircraft, forcing some to retreat.

The airstrikes have sparked fresh international concern. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for sanctions against Israel, citing the rising civilian toll in Yemen and Gaza. Humanitarian groups warned that the new wave of attacks risks worsening an already dire situation in Yemen, which is struggling with widespread food shortages and collapsing health services.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the strikes, vowing further operations until “terrorist threats” from Yemen are neutralized.

Meanwhile, fears are mounting that the conflict could draw in wider regional players, with the Houthis pledging to continue attacks in solidarity with Palestinians.

The situation remains tense, with expectations of further retaliation and mounting pressure from the international community for restraint.
