Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake Strikes Nabire, Papua; No Casualties Reported

Nabire:  A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck Indonesia’s easternmost province of Papua early Friday, causing scattered structural damage in the coastal town of Nabire. Authorities reported that, fortunately, there have been no immediate casualties.

The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed that the earthquake’s epicenter was located 28 kilometers south of Nabire at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency indicated that the inland quake posed no threat of a tsunami.

The tremor caused the collapse of at least two houses and the town’s main bridge. Minor damage was reported to a government office, a local church, and the airport. Residents were forced to flee to higher ground in panic, and telecommunication networks in Nabire and surrounding towns were temporarily disrupted.

Nabire has a history of seismic activity. In 2004, the town experienced two deadly earthquakes, one in February that killed 30 people and another in November that caused 32 deaths. Situated on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” Indonesia frequently faces earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Authorities in Nabire have stated that the situation is under control and are continuing efforts to assess the full extent of the damage and provide assistance to affected residents.
