Order of Malta Expands Humanitarian Lifeline in War-Torn Ukraine

Kyiv: The Sovereign Order of Malta has reinforced its commitment to Ukraine with a promise to strengthen and expand its humanitarian network, as the country continues to endure the devastating effects of war. Grand Hospitaller Josef D. Blotz concluded a four-day mission in Ukraine, during which he visited a wide range of relief projects and emphasized the importance of sustained, coordinated support for civilians, soldiers, and displaced families.

During his visit, Blotz noted that the Order’s presence in Ukraine since 1991 was crucial in enabling a swift response to the humanitarian crisis triggered by the Russian invasion. Unlike many international organizations that had to be deployed from abroad, the Order of Malta had already established a strong local infrastructure. This allowed for immediate intervention, particularly in the areas of food distribution, shelter provision, medical care, and psychological assistance.

One of the most urgent needs, according to Blotz, is the rehabilitation of war-wounded soldiers and civilians, many of whom face lifelong challenges after amputations or other severe injuries. In Lviv, the Order opened a specialized prosthetic clinic in 2022, which has already provided more than 250 prosthetics to victims of landmine explosions and combat injuries. Blotz underlined that such interventions are not only about restoring physical mobility but also about restoring dignity and hope to those whose lives have been forever changed.

The humanitarian mission also focuses on children and orphans who have been deeply scarred by the war. Blotz recalled meeting children in shelters who, despite their losses, found reasons to smile again under the care of volunteers. He described these moments as among the most powerful experiences of his visit, symbolizing resilience and the human capacity to find hope even in times of darkness.

Since February 2022, the Order of Malta has significantly scaled up its operations. More than 10,000 tonnes of humanitarian aid have been delivered to Ukraine, over 300,000 refugees have been assisted at border crossings, and around 60 shelters have been established to house the displaced. Altogether, over 4 million people have received support, ranging from food and medicine to psychosocial counseling and long-term rehabilitation.

This vast relief operation represents the largest mobilization of the Order of Malta since World War II, with resources exceeding €80 million. The mission is supported not only by Ukrainian volunteers but also by the Order’s national branches in Germany, Austria, France, Italy, Poland, Lithuania, Hungary, Romania, and Slovakia, all of which are engaged in refugee support projects across Europe.

Reflecting on his journey, Blotz emphasized that the conflict is far from over, and neither are the humanitarian challenges it brings. However, he insisted that the Order of Malta remains committed for the long term, working to foster resilience at both individual and community levels. “This is not about short-term charity,” he said. “It is about walking alongside the people of Ukraine for as long as it takes, ensuring that hope and dignity are never lost.”
