German Defence Minister Warns of Rising Russian Threat in Space

Berlin: Germany has raised alarms over the growing threat posed by Russian space activities. Speaking at a space conference in Berlin, Defence Minister Boris Pistorius highlighted the increasing militarization of space and its implications for national and allied security. He specifically warned that Russia, alongside China, has rapidly enhanced its space warfare capabilities, including disrupting, blinding, and potentially destroying satellites.

Minister Pistorius drew attention to the activities of two Russian Luch Olymp satellites that have been tracking Intelsat satellites used by German forces and other NATO allies. “Russia and China have expanded their capabilities for warfare in space rapidly over the past years. They can manipulate or kinetically destroy satellites,” Pistorius said, emphasizing the urgent need to address this evolving threat.

The German minister called for urgent discussions on developing offensive space capabilities as a deterrent, underscoring that satellites play a critical role in both military operations and civilian communications. He stressed that NATO must enhance its resilience in space to ensure collective security, reflecting growing concern over the strategic importance of space as a frontier in modern defense.

Pistorius’ warning comes amid wider Western concerns about the militarization of space, with NATO allies monitoring Russia’s rapid advancements in anti-satellite technologies. As nations increasingly look to space for strategic advantage, Germany is advocating a proactive approach to strengthen both defensive and offensive capabilities in this critical domain.

This statement marks a significant step in Germany’s efforts to prepare for potential threats in space, highlighting the intersection of technology, geopolitics, and defense strategy in the 21st century.
