UN Security Council to Vote on Russia and China’s Proposal to Delay Iran Sanctions

United Nations: The United Nations Security Council is set to vote on a resolution proposed by Russia and China to delay the reimposition of U.N. sanctions on Iran for six months. The sanctions are scheduled to automatically return after Britain, France, and Germany triggered a 30-day process, accusing Tehran of violating the 2015 nuclear deal that limits Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

The resolution put forward by Russia and China seeks to postpone the sanctions for half a year. For it to pass, it must receive at least nine votes in favor and avoid vetoes from permanent members such as Britain, France, or the United States. Diplomatic sources, however, indicate that the resolution is unlikely to be adopted due to expected abstentions.

Iran has strongly criticized the snapback mechanism, describing it as a political tool that undermines diplomatic efforts. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed confidence in the country’s ability to overcome obstacles, including recent attacks on nuclear facilities at Natanz and Fordow.

In response, Britain, France, and Germany have offered Iran a temporary extension to allow further negotiations, proposing a delay of up to six months if Tehran complies with conditions such as restoring U.N. nuclear inspectors’ access and engaging with the United States in talks.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has also stated that Tehran may cancel its agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency to allow inspections if Western countries reactivate U.N. sanctions. He emphasized that the inspection agreement would only remain valid in the absence of hostile actions, including the snapback of sanctions.

The outcome of the Security Council vote will play a critical role in determining the future of Iran’s nuclear program and the ongoing international diplomatic efforts to address concerns over its nuclear activities.
