US Envoy Hails UK’s Key Role in Hostage Release, Applauds Jonathan Powell

Washington: Steve Witkoff, the US special envoy to the Middle East, has publicly praised the United Kingdom’s “vital” contributions to achieving the recent ceasefire and the release of hostages in Israel. In a statement posted on X, Witkoff highlighted the pivotal efforts of Jonathan Powell, the UK government’s National Security Adviser, in coordinating behind-the-scenes diplomacy.

“I would like to acknowledge the vital role of the United Kingdom in assisting and coordinating efforts that have led us to this historic day in Israel,” Witkoff wrote. “In particular, I want to recognize the incredible input and tireless efforts of National Security Advisor Jonathan Powell.”

Witkoff’s remarks come in stark contrast to recent comments by US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee, who criticized UK Cabinet Minister Bridget Phillipson, calling her assessment of Britain’s involvement in the ceasefire “delusional.” The envoy’s statement, by contrast, underscores strong US recognition of London’s strategic role in facilitating dialogue and negotiations.

The praise is also politically significant for Powell, who has faced intense scrutiny at home from opposition parties over his involvement in the collapse of prosecutions against two Britons accused of spying for China. Witkoff’s endorsement reinforces Powell’s international reputation as a skilled negotiator capable of managing delicate, high-stakes crises.

The UK’s diplomatic engagement, as highlighted by the US envoy, reflects the broader importance of multinational coordination in resolving the hostage situation and stabilizing the region following months of tension. Witkoff’s acknowledgment signals continued close cooperation between the US and UK on Middle Eastern security and humanitarian efforts.
