Gaza City: Aid operations in Gaza have begun delivering hot meals, bread, and cooking gas to residents across the enclave, the United Nations confirmed on Monday. Tom Fletcher, U.N. Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, described the initial distributions as part of a broader effort to scale up humanitarian assistance following the recent ceasefire.
“The humanitarian scale-up in Gaza is well underway,” Fletcher wrote on X, emphasizing that the operation marks the start of a coordinated and expansive relief effort. Aid agencies have secured Israeli approval to bring in additional shipments, increasing the cleared pipeline to a total of 190,000 metric tons, encompassing food, shelter items, medicine, and other essential supplies.
“This is just beginning,” Fletcher said, highlighting the UN’s plan for the first 60 days of the ceasefire. He added that the UN and its partners intend to expand both the scale and scope of operations to ensure life-saving aid and essential services reach communities throughout Gaza.
Fletcher concluded by expressing gratitude to the humanitarian teams and partners working to deliver the supplies, stating, “We are determined to deliver. Thank you to everyone involved.”
The ramp-up in aid comes after weeks of disruption and scarcity in Gaza, as the ceasefire provides a critical window to address urgent needs. Humanitarian agencies are prioritizing immediate food and medical assistance while preparing to sustain long-term support to affected populations across the territory.
