Russia Criticizes Trump’s Gaza-Focused Peace Plan as ‘Too Vague’

Moscow: Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Monday described US President Donald Trump’s proposal to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as “too vague,” noting that it focuses primarily on the Gaza Strip while offering only general references to Palestinian statehood.
“We have noted that Donald Trump’s peace plan only addresses the Gaza Strip. It mentions statehood, but in rather general terms,” Lavrov told reporters covering his meetings in Arab countries. He emphasized the need for greater clarity and concrete measures, particularly regarding the West Bank, which remains outside the plan’s immediate framework.

Lavrov’s remarks mark Moscow’s clearest signal to date that it considers the Trump initiative insufficiently detailed and lacking the comprehensive scope needed to resolve the broader conflict. Nonetheless, he expressed hope that all agreements reached between Israel and Hamas under the plan would be fully implemented.

Russia has long positioned itself as a diplomatic actor in the Middle East, advocating for balanced engagement with both Israel and the Palestinians. Lavrov’s statements reflect Moscow’s insistence that any lasting peace solution must address governance, territorial questions, and security arrangements across both Gaza and the West Bank, rather than focusing solely on one enclave.

The comments add another layer of complexity to international reactions to the Trump peace proposal, highlighting the divergent perspectives among key global actors regarding the feasibility and scope of post-conflict governance in the region.
