India Denies Trump’s Claim on Russian Oil Purchases

New Delhi: India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has dismissed  U.S. President Donald Trump’s statement that Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured him India would stop buying oil from Russia.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified during a press briefing that he was not aware of any conversation between the two leaders regarding this matter. He emphasized that no such discussion had taken place.

Trump, speaking at a press conference in the Oval Office, had claimed that Modi had promised to halt India’s Russian oil imports, describing it as “a big stop.” The MEA’s response underscores India’s commitment to safeguarding its energy security amid global market fluctuations.

This episode highlights the ongoing complexities in India-U.S. relations concerning energy policy and geopolitical interests, reflecting the careful balancing India maintains in its international engagements.
