London:In a significant diplomatic development, European leaders including those from the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and the European Union joined Ukraine in issuing a joint statement today supporting U.S. President Donald Trump's call for an immediate ceasefire along the current battle lines in Ukraine.
The statement emphasizes the urgency of halting hostilities immediately and using the existing frontlines as the foundation for future peace negotiations. This position aligns with President Trump's recent discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy where the U.S. leader advocated for a ceasefire and proposed that the current lines of contact serve as the starting point for talks.
The joint statement also indicates that European leaders will convene later this week at an EU summit and in the coalition of the willing format, a group of countries supporting Ukraine.
President Zelenskyy is scheduled to attend the coalition meeting in London on Friday. The coalition, initiated by France and Britain in February, has been engaged in discussions to define military contributions for Ukraine and strategies to deter further Russian aggression once a final truce is achieved.
This unified stance marks a notable shift in European diplomacy, reflecting a growing consensus on the need for immediate action to end the conflict and pave the way for lasting peace negotiations.
