Zelensky visits Sweden for defense talks amid ongoing conflict

Stockholm: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in Sweden on Wednesday for high-level talks with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, focusing on defense cooperation and potential arms deals. The discussions are expected to include Sweden’s Gripen fighter jets and other military equipment.

The visit comes as Ukraine continues to defend itself against Russia’s ongoing invasion. Linköping, where the talks are taking place, is home to Saab, the Swedish defense company that manufactures the Gripen jets, GlobalEye surveillance aircraft, and various missile systems.

Ukraine has previously expressed interest in acquiring Gripen jets, though the plan was postponed to prioritize training and integration of American F-16 fighters. Ukrainian pilots have already participated in tests in Sweden to prepare for a possible deployment.

Prime Minister Kristersson emphasized Sweden’s support for Ukraine, stating that a “strong and capable Ukraine is a key priority” and reaffirmed his country’s commitment to deepening bilateral defense cooperation.

The outcome of Zelensky’s visit could strengthen military ties between the two nations and potentially accelerate Ukraine’s access to advanced defense systems.
