Saudi Arabia moves closer to buying US F35 fighter jets after key Pentagon approval

Washington: Saudi Arabia’s request to purchase advanced F35 stealth fighter jets from the United States has passed a major stage of approval at the Pentagon, according to officials familiar with the process. The move brings the kingdom closer to acquiring one of the world’s most advanced combat aircraft, a step that could reshape the military balance in the Middle East.

Reports suggest that Saudi Arabia has requested to buy up to 48 F35 Lightning II jets, built by Lockheed Martin. The proposal recently cleared a significant policy review within the US Department of Defense, moving to the top levels of the Pentagon for further consideration. The deal, however, still requires approval from US President Donald J. Trump and formal notification to Congress before it can proceed.

If completed, this would be a landmark arms deal between Washington and Riyadh, signaling a deepening of defense ties under the Trump administration. It would also mark a major step in Saudi Arabia’s plan to modernize its air force and enhance its defense capabilities amid growing regional tensions, especially with Iran.

The United States has traditionally restricted the sale of its most advanced fighter jets in the Middle East to preserve Israel’s qualitative military edge. Israel is currently the only country in the region operating the F35. Any move to supply the same aircraft to Saudi Arabia would require close coordination with Israel and could face political scrutiny in Washington.

Human rights concerns, including the 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, may also raise opposition from US lawmakers. Several members of Congress have previously questioned large arms deals with Saudi Arabia due to the kingdom’s human rights record and its role in the Yemen conflict.

Despite the potential hurdles, defense analysts say the progress of the deal reflects Washington’s willingness to strengthen security cooperation with Riyadh. The proposed sale comes as Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is expected to visit Washington soon, a trip that could further shape the discussion on the deal.

For Saudi Arabia, obtaining the F35 would be a major milestone in its effort to build one of the region’s most advanced air forces. The kingdom already operates modern aircraft such as the F15, Tornado, and Eurofighter Typhoon.

The final decision on the deal remains pending, but if approved, it would represent a significant shift in regional defense relations and a new chapter in the long-term US-Saudi partnership.
