Vatican City: In a heartfelt video message to thousands of young people assembled at St. Elizabeth’s Cathedral in Košice, Slovakia, Pope Leo XIV called on them to become “builders of bridges and sowers of trust” in a world often fractured by division and mistrust.
“Jesus calls you to be witnesses of communion, to spread trust where suspicion reigns,” the Pope said, encouraging the youth to live their faith with joy and authenticity. “Do not be afraid to show that you are Christians live the Gospel with enthusiasm and share the happiness that flows from encountering the Lord.”
The vibrant gathering, held as part of the Jubilee of Young People organized by the Archdiocese of Košice, featured a Eucharistic celebration led by Archbishop Bernard Bober, President of the Slovakian Episcopal Conference, together with Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Nicola Girasoli. The evening also included spirited performances by the Slovak Catholic band Godzone and Portuguese priest-DJ Fr. Guilherme Peixhoto, known for his appearance at World Youth Day 2023 in Lisbon.
Reflecting on his message for the 40th World Youth Day, to be celebrated on November 23, Pope Leo XIV reminded the youth that they are “never alone,” for “God’s love, forgiveness, and encouragement accompany you always.”
He invited them to carry the light of Christ into their everyday environments families, schools, universities, workplaces, and communities saying that this living witness would keep “the youthful face of the Church shining brightly in the heart of Central Europe.”
“This certainty of being loved by God,” he added, “frees you from indifference and inspires a love that is open and generous. Be witnesses of this joy!”
Calling St. Elizabeth’s Cathedral “a living heart of faith and hope,” the Pope praised the event as a “tangible expression of fraternity and peace born from friendship with Christ.”
Pope Leo XIV closed his message by imparting his Apostolic Blessing to all gathered and entrusted them to the care of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
