Beijing: China has announced a new set of education rules aimed at reducing stress and pressure among school students by promoting more sleep, physical activity, and less screen time. The Ministry of Education released the guidelines as part of a national effort to improve the mental and physical well being of children.
The new measures require schools to limit the use of mobile phones and set up screen free periods during the school day. Each student must have at least two hours of physical exercise daily, and schools are encouraged to adjust their schedules to allow students to get enough sleep and rest.
The plan also includes reducing the amount of homework and discouraging excessive studying. Teachers will have fewer administrative tasks, and schools are being asked not to assign duties or work to them during weekends and holidays.
According to education officials, the goal is to create a healthier learning environment for children and reduce the intense competition that has long been part of the Chinese education system. The ministry said that a good balance between study, rest, and recreation is important for both academic success and personal growth.
This move follows the government’s earlier “Double Reduction Policy,” which was introduced in 2021 to reduce homework loads and regulate private tutoring. The latest guidelines go further by focusing on daily lifestyle habits such as sleep and screen time.
Experts say the reforms could help address growing concerns about anxiety and stress among young students. However, some parents and teachers are unsure how easy it will be to enforce these changes, especially in cities where competition for top schools remains strong.
Studies have already shown some positive results from previous measures, including reduced sedentary time and better overall health among students. Still, education analysts believe it will take time to see whether the new rules can bring lasting improvements in student well-being.
The government has said it will continue monitoring the results and may introduce more steps if needed to ensure children grow up in a more relaxed and balanced learning environment.
