Srikakulam Diocese Marks World Day of the Poor with Major Free Healthcare Drive

Srikakulam: In a heartfelt observance of the World Day of the Poor, the Diocese of Srikakulam in Hyderabad hosted an extensive free medical outreach at the Bishop’s House, reaching hundreds of underprivileged families with healthcare, nourishment, and material support. The initiative, aligned with the global Church’s call to stand with the poor, was made possible through the collaboration of a dedicated medical team from King James Hospital.

The event was spearheaded by Bishop Rayarala Vijayakumar, with logistical support from Fr. Alphons, Director of the Social Service Centre. Fr. Dusi Devaraj, Vicar General, and Fr. Paul Bhusan also remained actively involved, ensuring smooth coordination and offering personal support to the visiting families. Their presence highlighted the diocese’s ongoing commitment to mercy-driven pastoral service.

Doctors and nurses from King James Hospital offered a comprehensive range of services, including eye check-ups, cardiac and ECG screening, laboratory tests, blood pressure and sugar monitoring, general medical consultations, health guidance, and the distribution of free medicines. All care was provided at no cost, enabling elderly individuals, daily-wage labourers, and low-income families to access essential treatment they often cannot afford.

The camp remained active throughout the day, drawing a continuous stream of beneficiaries, many of whom shared their appreciation for the timely medical assistance. In addition to healthcare support, the diocese also organized the distribution of clothes, offering comfort and dignity to families experiencing economic hardship.

The programme was integrated with the diocese’s weekly tradition of serving free lunch to the poor at the Bishop’s House. This ongoing initiative, rooted in Christian charity, took on deeper significance as communities worldwide marked the World Day of the Poor.

Reflections shared during the event drew from the teachings of Pope Francis, who has frequently reminded the faithful that “the poor are the true passports to heaven” and “the poor are a resource; they help us live the Gospel in its most authentic form.” Participants were also reminded of the words of Pope Leo XIV, who affirmed: “A living Church is recognized by its love for the poor, for it is among them that Christ chooses to dwell.”

The diocese closed the day’s programme by encouraging local parishes and community groups to continue such efforts year-round, stressing that genuine solidarity with the poor must be a sustained and compassionate mission, not limited to a single day of observance.
