Fact Check: Imran Khan’s sister video calling Pakistan army chief “radicalised Islamist” flagged as deepfake

Islamabad: A viral video circulating on social media claiming Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan described Pakistan’s army chief General Asim Munir as a “radicalised Islamist who wants war against India” has been flagged as misleading, with media networks and independent fact checkers confirming it is a deepfake.

The clip, which appeared to show Aleema speaking during an interview on international television, quickly gained traction across platforms and was shared by political accounts in India and Pakistan.

However, Sky News, the broadcaster allegedly featured in the clip, issued a clarification stating that the footage was fabricated using artificial intelligence. The channel said no such interview or statement was made on its platform and that the circulating video misused its logo and broadcast format.

Fact-checking organisations in India and Pakistan also analysed the footage and found inconsistencies in lip movement, audio layering and visual artefacts commonly associated with AI-generated content.

There has been no official comment from Aleema Khan so far on the video, but her associates have reportedly called it “digitally manipulated.”

General Asim Munir has not responded to the viral claim, though his office has previously dismissed similar social media content as attempts to create instability.

The incident has renewed concerns about the growing use of AI-generated misinformation in ongoing political and military tensions in the region.

Cybersecurity experts warn that deepfakes are increasingly being weaponised to influence public opinion, especially during sensitive moments involving national security, elections or diplomatic relations.

Authorities in Pakistan and India have not yet announced any investigation into the source of the video.
