Priests Should Build Up the Church, Inspired by Love for Christ: Mar Raphael Thattil

Kochi: Major Archbishop Mar Raphael Thattil called on the future priests of the Syro Malabar Church to serve the Church with deep love for Christ and a strong awareness of their ecclesial identity. He was addressing the annual gathering of deacons who are preparing to receive priesthood during 2025–26 at Mount St. Thomas, Kakkanad, the headquarters of the Syro Malabar Church.

In his message, the Major Archbishop reminded the deacons that priests should go beyond local affiliations and develop a firm understanding of the heritage, liturgical traditions and missionary history of the Syro Malabar Church. He urged them to remain faithful to the teachings of the Church and to become pastors who inspire unity and commitment among the faithful.

A total of 250 deacons from various dioceses and religious congregations across India and abroad participated in the convention.

The program began at 10 AM and was inaugurated by the Major Archbishop. Bishop Mar Tony Neelankavil, Chairman of the Clergy Commission, delivered the welcome address. The keynote message was given by Rev. Fr. Bobby Jose Kattikad, well known for his spiritual reflections and writings. Very Rev. Dr. Abraham Kavilpurayidathil, Chancellor of the Syro Malabar Church Curia, and Rev. Dr. Tom Olickalott, Secretary of the Clergy Commission, also addressed the participants.

Following the inaugural session, a solemn Holy Qurbana was celebrated, presided over by the Major Archbishop.

The convention was organized under the leadership of the Clergy Commission of the Syro Malabar Church as part of the preparation process for the deacons before their ordination.
