New Delhi: India’s plan to induct a leased nuclear powered submarine from Russia is moving forward but with a revised delivery timeline. The submarine which will be commissioned as INS Chakra 3 is now expected to arrive between 2027 and 2028 instead of the earlier estimate of 2025.
Government officials have clarified that the submarine deal is not new but part of an agreement signed in 2019. The vessel identified as the Russian Akula class submarine K 391 Bratsk is undergoing a major refit and modernisation program in Russia before it can be handed over to the Indian Navy.
Reports say the submarine will receive upgraded systems including Indian made communication and sensor equipment. However because of its age and the scale of refurbishment there have been delays. International sanctions on Russia and supply chain disruptions have also affected the schedule.
The submarine will be leased to India for ten years. Once commissioned the INS Chakra 3 will help the navy strengthen its underwater capability and train crews for future nuclear powered submarines being developed under India’s own program.
Experts say the acquisition is important for India’s long term plan to expand its nuclear submarine fleet at a time when regional maritime competition especially with China is increasing in the Indian Ocean.
Despite the delay the project remains on track and officials expect the submarine to play a key role in improving operational readiness until India’s indigenous nuclear submarines become fully operational later in the decade.
