Washington: US President Donald Trump has confirmed that a large United States naval force is moving toward the Gulf region, underscoring rising tensions between Washington and Tehran. The announcement comes amid growing concerns over regional security and the risk of further escalation.
Speaking to the media, Trump said the deployment was a precautionary measure and part of the US effort to closely watch Iran’s actions. He described the naval movement as significant and said it was intended to protect American interests and allies in the region. At the same time, he repeated that his administration does not want war and hopes the situation can be managed without direct conflict.
According to US defence officials, the deployment includes an aircraft carrier strike group led by the USS Abraham Lincoln, accompanied by guided missile destroyers, cruisers, and logistical support ships. Military sources also confirmed that additional air power, including fighter jets and air defence systems, is being repositioned to strengthen the US military posture in the Middle East.
The move follows weeks of heightened rhetoric and security concerns involving Iran. US officials have accused Tehran of destabilising activities in the region, while Iran has rejected those claims and blamed Washington for increasing tensions through military pressure and sanctions.
Iranian leaders responded firmly to Trump’s remarks. Senior officials warned that any attack on Iranian territory or interests would trigger a swift and forceful retaliation. Statements from Tehran stressed that Iran is fully prepared to defend itself and would hold the United States responsible for any escalation caused by military action.
Despite the strong language, there is no official confirmation that the United States is preparing for an immediate strike. American officials have emphasised that the naval deployment is meant to act as a deterrent and signal readiness rather than indicate an intention to launch an attack. They also noted that diplomatic channels with Iran have not been formally closed.
