Rahul Gandhi accuses government of selling out India over US trade deal

New Delhi: Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday strongly criticised the government in the Lok Sabha over the recent India United States trade understanding, claiming that the country’s interests have been compromised.

Speaking during the Budget session, Gandhi said the agreement would allow the United States to influence India’s decisions on key matters such as oil imports and market access. He alleged that India would no longer have full freedom in deciding from whom it buys oil and what goods it allows into its markets.

The Congress leader accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party of weakening India’s bargaining power. He said the deal appears to lower tariffs on American goods while Indian exports to the United States continue to face high duties. According to him, this imbalance could hurt Indian farmers, small businesses and manufacturers.

Gandhi also expressed concern about the possible impact on agriculture and energy security. He said Indian farmers should not suffer because of international trade negotiations and stressed that India must always negotiate as an equal partner.

His remarks led to heated scenes in the House, with treasury bench members objecting to his statements. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju rejected the allegations and said the government is committed to protecting national interests. He accused the opposition of spreading confusion and politicising economic matters.

The government has maintained that the trade discussions are aimed at boosting exports, strengthening strategic ties and creating more opportunities for Indian businesses. Officials argue that closer economic cooperation with the United States will help India grow faster and attract more investment.

The debate reflects wider political differences over how India should manage its trade relationships while safeguarding domestic industries and farmers. As negotiations continue, the issue is expected to remain a major point of discussion both inside and outside Parliament.
