Taiwan says China shows force at sea while speaking of peace

Taipei: Taiwan has raised fresh concern over growing Chinese military activity near the island, saying it sees warships and warplanes rather than signs of peace even as Beijing holds talks with opposition leaders.

Officials in Taiwan said China recently deployed a much larger number of naval and coast guard vessels around the island than usual. The increase in ships and aircraft is being seen as a serious and steady rise in pressure from Beijing.

The warning comes at a time when Chinese authorities are engaging with leaders from Taiwan’s opposition Kuomintang, who are visiting the mainland and promoting dialogue. Taiwan’s government, however, has questioned the value of these talks, pointing out that military activity has not reduced.

The situation has added to political tensions inside Taiwan. The ruling administration has criticised the opposition for delaying defence plans and weakening the island’s ability to respond to threats. The opposition, on the other hand, says engagement with China is necessary to avoid conflict.

China considers Taiwan as part of its territory and has repeatedly said it prefers peaceful reunification, but it has not ruled out the use of force. In recent years, it has increased military drills and patrols near the island, raising concerns in Taipei and among its allies.

The latest developments also come as global attention is spread across multiple conflicts. Taiwan remains a sensitive issue in relations between China and the United States, with Washington urging Taipei to strengthen its defence readiness.

Observers say the contrast between China’s diplomatic outreach and its military presence reflects a broader strategy to maintain pressure while shaping political dynamics within Taiwan.

With tensions continuing, Taiwan has called for greater international awareness, warning that the gap between words and actions could further destabilise the region.
