Gunmen kill at least 29 in Nigerian village attack raising fresh security fears

Yola: At least 29 people have been killed after gunmen attacked a village in northeastern Nigeria’s Adamawa state, in a tragic incident that has shocked local communities and raised fresh concerns about security in the region.

The attack happened in Guyaku village in Gombi area, where armed men opened fire on residents. Witnesses said many of the victims were gathered in a public space, including a football field, when the attackers struck. The shooting caused panic as people tried to run for safety, while several homes were also damaged.

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri visited the affected area and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives. He described the killings as heartbreaking and assured residents that authorities would take steps to improve security and prevent further violence.

Early reports suggest that the extremist group Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack. However, officials are still investigating, as multiple armed groups operate in northeastern Nigeria, including factions linked to Boko Haram.

The latest killings highlight the ongoing insecurity in northern Nigeria, where communities have faced years of violence from insurgent groups. Many villages remain vulnerable due to limited security presence, allowing attackers to strike and escape easily.

Residents in the area say fear is growing as such incidents continue, with many calling for stronger protection and faster response from security forces. Authorities say efforts are underway to track down those responsible and restore calm, but the attack has once again exposed the serious challenges facing the region.
