Pope Leo XIV says tradition and renewal must guide Church liturgy

Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV has called for a renewed commitment to the Church’s liturgical life, saying that true renewal must remain rooted in Catholic tradition while helping believers deepen their faith and strengthen the Church’s mission of evangelization.

Speaking during his Wednesday General Audience in St Peter’s Square at the Vatican, the Pope reflected on Sacrosanctum Concilium, the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy issued during the Second Vatican Council in 1963. The document was the first major text approved by the Council and introduced important reforms in the way the Catholic liturgy is celebrated.

The Pope explained that the liturgy has long been a powerful force for spreading the Gospel and bringing people closer to God. He said the Church must continue renewing this spiritual energy while remaining faithful to authentic Catholic tradition.

According to Pope Leo XIV, tradition and progress should not be seen as opposing ideas. Instead, he described tradition as something living and dynamic, capable of growth and development over time. He stressed that the reforms introduced by the Second Vatican Council were not meant to break with the past, but to help the faithful participate more fully in the life of the Church.

The liturgical reforms of Vatican II included the use of local languages during Mass instead of only Latin and encouraged greater participation by ordinary believers in worship. The Pope said these changes helped the liturgy become more accessible to people across different cultures and societies.

During his address, Pope Leo XIV also spoke directly to priests, urging them to celebrate the liturgy with humility, respect and faithfulness to Church teaching. He reminded clergy that liturgical celebrations should reflect reverence for God and unity within the Church community.

Quoting past Popes including Pius XII, John Paul II and Benedict XVI, the Pope underlined the strong connection between the renewal of the liturgy and the renewal of the Church itself. He said the Church not only celebrates the liturgy but also draws spiritual strength and identity from it.

The Pope noted that throughout history the Church’s worship has adapted to different cultures and historical periods while preserving its essential spiritual meaning. This, he said, allowed Christianity to spread across nations and generations while remaining united in faith.

At the same time, Pope Leo XIV warned against making personal or unauthorized changes to liturgical practices. He said any reform or adaptation should be carefully studied from theological, historical and pastoral perspectives to avoid confusion among the faithful.

He emphasized that the Council Fathers who prepared Sacrosanctum Concilium insisted that new liturgical forms must grow naturally from the Church’s existing traditions. According to the Pope, this approach protects both unity and continuity within the Catholic Church.

The General Audience formed part of Pope Leo XIV’s continuing catechesis series on the documents of the Second Vatican Council, one of the most significant events in modern Catholic history. Through the series, the Pope has been revisiting the Council’s teachings and their importance for the Church today.

The Pope concluded by saying that genuine liturgical progress should always strengthen communion within the Church rather than weaken it. He encouraged Catholics around the world to see the liturgy not only as ritual worship but also as a source of spiritual renewal and missionary energy for the modern world.
