Monsoon strengthens across Kerala as red alert issued in six districts

Kochi: The southwest monsoon has intensified across Kerala, bringing widespread rain, strong winds, and concerns about flooding and landslides in several parts of the state. Weather authorities have issued a red alert for six districts on June 6 as heavy rainfall is expected to continue over the weekend.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the monsoon has become active across Kerala after making its onset earlier this week. The latest forecasts indicate that several districts in central and northern Kerala are likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall, prompting authorities to strengthen precautionary measures.

The districts placed under red alert are expected to experience very heavy to extremely heavy rain. Officials have warned that some areas could receive more than 20 centimetres of rainfall within a single day. Such intense rain increases the risk of flash floods, overflowing rivers, waterlogging in towns and cities, and landslides in hilly regions.

The situation is being closely monitored by district administrations and disaster management authorities. Emergency teams have been kept on standby, particularly in areas that have experienced landslides and flood damage during previous monsoon seasons.

Hilly districts such as Wayanad and Idukki are among the areas under close watch. These regions are especially vulnerable because continuous rainfall can weaken soil stability and trigger landslides. Residents living near slopes, riverbanks, and low lying areas have been advised to remain alert and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

Heavy rain has already affected normal life in several places. Roads have reported waterlogging, traffic movement has slowed in some urban centres, and strong winds have led to concerns about falling trees and power disruptions. Local officials are also keeping a close watch on dams and reservoirs as water levels begin to rise.

The India Meteorological Department has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour in some areas. People have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rain and to stay indoors during thunderstorms whenever possible.

The fishing community has received a special warning as rough sea conditions are expected along the Kerala coast. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea until weather conditions improve. Coastal residents have also been asked to remain cautious as strong winds and high waves may affect shoreline areas.

Schools, local government offices, and emergency response agencies are continuously reviewing the weather situation. Depending on rainfall intensity, district administrations may issue additional advisories regarding educational institutions, public transport, and outdoor activities.

The strengthening monsoon comes at a time when much of India is looking forward to a healthy rainy season. The monsoon is vital for agriculture, water resources, and overall economic activity across the country. While farmers generally welcome the rains, periods of exceptionally heavy rainfall can create serious challenges for communities and infrastructure.

Weather experts expect the active monsoon phase to continue over Kerala during the coming days. Authorities have urged the public not to rely on rumours and instead follow updates issued by the India Meteorological Department and official disaster management agencies.

As Kerala prepares for another spell of intense monsoon weather, residents are being encouraged to stay vigilant, take necessary precautions, and cooperate with local authorities to ensure public safety.
