Vatican City: Pope Leo XIV has called for the development of artificial intelligence to be guided by wisdom and charity, saying technological progress should protect human dignity and strengthen the bonds that unite people.
The Pope conveyed the message to participants at the first AI4Peace Global Biennial Symposium and International Conference, an international meeting examining the opportunities and challenges created by artificial intelligence in preventing and resolving conflicts, protecting human rights and improving global governance.
His message was read by Fr Andrea Ciucci, Chancellor of the Pontifical Academy for Life, during the symposium at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome.
Pope Leo said the discussion on artificial intelligence takes place at a time marked by conflict and division. He stressed that technological development needs more than technical knowledge and should be guided by a broader vision rooted in wisdom and charity.
The Pope said the goal should be to ensure that technological progress serves the dignity of every person and helps strengthen the relationships that connect the human family.
He also referred to his Encyclical Magnifica humanitas, recalling its reflection that God’s plan of mercy continues throughout history and can serve as a guide for living according to the Gospel in the digital era.
Pope Leo also encouraged the participants to consider how artificial intelligence can contribute to peace when its development and use are directed towards the good of others. He highlighted the potential of AI to support dialogue, reconciliation and solidarity among peoples.
The Pope said technological innovation should be transformed into instruments that can contribute to peace rather than deepen divisions.
The first edition of the AI4Peace symposium opened on Monday at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome. Experts and researchers are taking part in discussions on artificial intelligence and its role in peacebuilding, conflict prevention and resolution, human rights and governance.
Pope Leo concluded by expressing his hope that the work of the participants would produce lasting results and assured them of his prayers.
