Ex Srilankan President to return next week, says reports

Colombo : Former Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa will return to the country on the 24th of August 2022, reported Newsfirst.

The daily cited Ex-Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga who visited the CID saying that the Former President will return next week.

Ex-president fled crisis-hit country earlier this month after protesters took over his house and offices, demanding he resign. He arrived in Thailand last week on a flight from Singapore, where he had been staying since mid-July.

Many had presumed that Rajapaksa would remain out of the country in self-imposed exile in order to avoid possible prosecution for accusations of corruption and war crimes allegations that date back over a decade.

While he was president he enjoyed immunity from prosecution, but now he is no longer in office, efforts have begun to investigate and arrest him and there are widespread calls on the streets of Sri Lanka for him and his family to face charges.

His apparent decision to return to Sri Lanka could be in part because he has few other options for travel.
