Campaign on Drug awareness on Sunday draws ire

Cochin – The Syro-Malabar Public Affairs Commission has condemned the recent decisions of the Government of Kerala to hold October 2nd as an awareness day against drugs.

Archbishop Mar Andrews Thazhath, Chairman of the Syro-Malabar Public Affairs Public Affairs Commission pointed out in a circular out the necessity to celebrate the birthday of Gandhiji, the father of the nation, appropriately. Anti-drug activities and awareness programs are essential in the context of increasing drug usage among children and youth, more so because drug mafia is taking a tight grip in the country. The Syro-Malabar Church is committed to wholeheartedly co-operate with the plans for these as they are arranged at the Government level.

However, as part of this year's Gandhi Jayanthi celebrations, it is learned that the authorities in the education department have decided to conduct an anti-drug campaign on Sunday, 2nd October with the participation of students, parents and teachers in schools. Sunday observance is of utmost importance to the church and is part of obedience to the Ten Commandments. On that day, the believers have to devote themselves to the worship of God and give catechetical training to the children. Hence, the said program is causing difficultly.

A ‘service week’ is usually organized in conjunction with Gandhi Jayanthi. The anti-drug campaign proposed as part of it may be postponed to another day during this week. Please be informed that the church will cooperate with such an arrangement.
