The New Council of Cardinals Gathers for First Meeting; Pope Francis Chairs the Same

Amid Pope Francis, the Council of Cardinals gathered today at the Vatican. After the Pope renewed the body on March 7, this is the new C9's first meeting.

The new Council consists of the Secretary of State, Cardinals Pietro Parolin; President of the Governorate of Vatican City State, Fernando Vérgez Alzaga; Archbishop of Kinshasa, Fridolin Ambongo Besungu; Archbishop of Bombay, Oswald Gracias; Archbishop of Boston, Seán Patrick O'Malley; Archbishop of Barcelona, Juan José Omella Omella; Archbishop of Québec, Gérald Lacroix; Archbishop of Luxembourg, Jean-Claude Hollerich and Archbishop of San Salvador de Bahia, Sérgio da Rocha. Archbishop of Archbishop Marco Mellino, titular bishop of Cresima, serves as the Council's Secretary.

The new Apostolic Constitution Praedicate Evangelium, which was published on March 19, 2022, will be the new Roman Curia's governing document. Pope Francis established the Council of Cardinals with a Chirograph on September 28, 2013, and it has been charged with assisting him in both the administration of the Universal Church and the reform of the Roman Curia.

The C9 met for the first time on October 1, 2013. Its most recent conference, held in December of last year, was devoted mostly to the continental phase of the Synod on Synodality.
