Syro-Malabar Catechism Children Celebrate First Holy Communion and Anointing in Dubai

Dubai – Reception of Sacraments, especially the Sacraments of Initiation, is a pivotal moment in every Christians life. The children of Syro-Malabar Catechism, Dubai experienced this joy and blessings on 13th May, Saturday when Ninety-nine children received the Sacraments of Holy Communion and Anointing (Confirmation).

Fifty One children received the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Forty Seven children who had not previously received the Sacrament of Anointing during their Baptism were also administered the Sacrament of Anointing alongwith Holy Communion. Fr. Varghese Kozhippadan, OFM Cap., the spiritual director of Malayalam Catholic Congregation of St Mary’s Church, Dubai, administered the Sacraments to the children. 

The Holy Qurbana began at 11am, the main celebrant being Fr. Varghese Kozhippadan. The solemn ceremony was initiated with the lighting of the lamp by Fr. Varghese; Head Master - Vipin Varghese; President of Syro-Malabar Community, Dubai - Manoj Thomas; Parent representative; Teacher representative and Childrens representatives. The light indicating Jesus the light of the world was solemnly passed on by lighting the candles of the recipients of the Sacraments.

The congregation was raised to a blessed atmosphere by the spiritual sermon of Fr. Varghese as he talked to both the parents and children present about the importance of a Sacramental life.



The entire ceremony was telecast live on the YouTube channel of Syro-Malabar Community, Dubai under the umbrella of which the Syro-Malabar Catechism wing functions.



Children receiving the Sacrament of First Holy Communion were prepared throughout the year for this very special day. They were also given extensive six-session preparatory classes and a Retreat session to prepare them to receive Jesus through the First Holy Communion by their respective Grade Four teachers.

Those who received the Anointing of the Holy Spirit, through the Sacrament of Anointing were also prepared through a two-session preparatory class.

The celebration was organized by the Admin team led by Vipin Varghese, Stephen Joy, Benny Thomas, Sony Manoj, Preety Varghese and Minu Arun. The Syro-Malabar Community executive committee members also contributed and supported the celebrations.


The Syro-Malabar Catechism is conducted on Saturdays and Sundays in Dubai. This year the Catechism department provided faith formation classes to around 1600 children. The department is supported by a strong team of 75 teachers and 50 volunteers.

The Catechism department will also celebrate its Annual day with ‘Celestial Bells 2023’ on 28th May.

'Summer Fest 2023' will also be held during the months of June/July. Children will be given an opportunity to portray their talents through this unique platform. The fest which was held online in 2022, will be conducted offline this year.
