KYIV - Ukraine announced on Monday that it successfully reclaimed control of an eighth village as part of its ongoing counteroffensive against Russian forces. Despite facing strong resistance, Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar declared that the "biggest blow" from Kyiv was yet to come.
The latest victory came with the retaking of Piatykhatky, a strategically important settlement located in a heavily fortified area along the front line, near the direct path to Ukraine's Azov Sea coast.
Kyiv has made significant progress in its offensive, advancing up to seven kilometers into Russian territory over the past two weeks and gaining control over an area of 113 square kilometers.
Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Maliar acknowledged the challenging nature of the conflict, stating that the enemy will not easily surrender their positions, and emphasized the need for Ukraine to prepare for a tough battle. She highlighted that the most intense fighting has been taking place in the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine.
Additionally, Maliar mentioned that the Ukrainian military has successfully prevented a Russian advance in the eastern part of the country, where Russian units, including air assault troops, have been concentrated.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy highlighted the positive outcomes for Ukraine in his video address, stating that while some sectors faced intensified attacks, overall, Ukrainian forces were making progress and defending against the enemy.
Ukrainian armed forces released videos showcasing their attacks and advancements in recapturing Piatykhatky village, demonstrating strikes on Russian positions and Ukrainian armored vehicles advancing. The videos concluded with soldiers proudly announcing the village's liberation.
Ukrainian forces claim successful missile and drone interceptions, while Russia allegedly continues shelling towns. Ukraine has made incremental gains, including the capture of Piatykhatky near the coast. President Zelenskiy seeks support for weapons. Both sides report heavy losses. Talks with Western arms manufacturers are underway to boost production.
The conflict has caused casualties and displacement. Russia claims to be "denazifying" Ukraine, while Ukraine and its allies view it as a land grab. Russia is redeploying forces to anticipate Ukraine's moves. The destruction of the Kakhovka dam has led to flooding and displacement along the front line.
