Rescue Ranger: The Innovative Drone Technology Helping Victims of Kerala Floods

Thiruvananthapuram - In 2018, Kerala faced an unprecedented catastrophe as heavy rainfall resulted in severe flooding, leaving the state devastated. Millions were evacuated as floodwaters engulfed homes and claimed the lives of over 483 people, with 15 more reported missing. Witnessing these distressing scenes, Anoop AB, the founder and CEO of Dexter Innovation Technologies Pvt Ltd, felt compelled to make a difference.

Inspired by the tragic events, Anoop and his business partner, Akhil, embarked on a journey to create an innovative drone-based device called 'Rescue Ranger.' This patented technology is designed to rescue flood-affected individuals, locate bodies in water, map underwater terrains, and provide relief to those stranded and distressed.

The multi-purpose life-saving equipment is equipped with GPS, four motors on either end, a high-resolution underwater camera, searchlights, a beacon siren, and front-end cameras. It enables rescuers to safely navigate hazardous floodwaters, extending a lifeline to people in perilous situations.

Recalling the challenges faced during the 2018 floods, Anoop emphasized the urgency to develop a device capable of handling various natural disaster scenarios involving water. The device's unique design allows it to carry loads of up to 120kg on two motors and up to 240-300kg on all four motors. Additionally, a sensor attached to the buoy records the temperature of a person, helping determine if they are alive or deceased, aiding the recovery process during floods.

Despite facing initial setbacks with failed prototypes and financial constraints, Dexter Innovation Technologies received a bank loan of Rs 10 lakh from the Ministry of Industry, Government of Kerala, in 2023. The first successful Rescue Ranger was launched at Pazhassi Reservoir in Kannur and is now registered with Startup India and the Kerala Startup Mission.

While the startup has received positive inquiries from both domestic and international sources, funding remains a significant obstacle to scaling up operations. Anoop remains hopeful that discussions with the government will lead to viable solutions. As the demand for Rescue Ranger increases, the company plans to prioritize disaster management, fire safety teams, and government agencies for supply.

With its remarkable potential to save lives and revolutionize rescue operations, Rescue Ranger is not just a product; it represents the passion and commitment of its creators to make a meaningful impact in times of crisis.
