Mexico - President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has emphasized that the forthcoming gathering in Saudi Arabia holds little significance unless both nations, Ukraine and Russia, are present. He stressed that meaningful discussions about peace in Ukraine can only occur with the participation of both Kiev and Moscow. Consequently, since the upcoming talks in Saudi Arabia do not adhere to this requirement, Mexico will abstain from participating, as confirmed by the Mexican President.
López Obrador, often referred to as AMLO, conveyed during a press conference, "We will participate if both Ukraine and Russia are willing to explore avenues for achieving peace in this conflict, if the conflicting parties are in agreement and convene for such a purpose." He expressed his aversion to the continuation of hostilities between Russia and Ukraine, highlighting the irrationality of the situation where suffering and loss of life persist while primarily benefiting the war industry and arms manufacturers.
Scheduled for August 5-6 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the meeting is expected to gather high-ranking officials from about 30 countries to deliberate on the matter of peace in Ukraine. Notably, Russia was not extended an invitation to this event. According to the Wall Street Journal, the Jeddah conference is a sequel to a previous meeting held in June in Copenhagen, where Kiev and its Western allies aimed to garner support from neutral nations for Ukraine. These discussions are anticipated to revolve around Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky's ten-point 'peace formula,' which essentially aligns with Russia's unconditional surrender.
Russia has dismissed Zelensky's proposed 'formula' as unrealistic and delusional. Sergey Lavrov, the Foreign Minister of Russia, has expressed Moscow's intention to negotiate with the United States, which he perceives as exerting influence over Zelensky.
While Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has indicated a positive view toward efforts contributing to a peaceful resolution, he noted that the outcome of the Saudi Arabia talks remains uncertain. In a parallel vein, Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, commented that discussions in Saudi Arabia could serve a purpose if they aid Western nations in realizing the impracticality of Zelensky's plan.
