Lisbon - In November 1, 2023, in Lisbon, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar engaged in discussions with his Portuguese counterpart, Joao Cravinho, focusing on the advancements in bilateral economic collaboration. The two leaders also exchanged perspectives on several international regions, including West Asia, Ukraine, Central Asia, and the Indo-Pacific.
Jaishankar expressed his views on the meeting through a post on X, saying, "Productive talks with FM @JoaoCravinho in Lisbon. Noted the progress in our bilateral economic cooperation. Appreciated the sustained political exchanges and Portugal's support for India-EU ties. Transformations underway in India can help take our partnership to a higher level. Cooperating on the global workplace and the digital domain offer great potential. Exchanged views on West Asia, Ukraine, Central Asia, and the Indo-Pacific."
Meanwhile, Cravinho regarded the discussions as a "pleasure" and emphasized the significance of these talks on bilateral dynamics. In response to Jaishankar's post on X, Cravinho mentioned, "Very good discussions, and always a pleasure to exchange with @DrSJaishankar on bilateral and issues and dynamics."
During his visit to Portugal, Jaishankar paid his respects to Mahatma Gandhi and Kasturba Gandhi in Lisbon, a gesture of reverence and remembrance.
Earlier, Jaishankar also convened a meeting with Portuguese Assembly President Augusto Santos Silva in Lisbon. Their talks centered on the importance of India and Portugal fostering close cooperation in a world marked by volatility.
Jaishankar's stay in Portugal, from October 31 to November 1, has facilitated further strengthening of the mutually beneficial relations between India and Portugal across various spheres.
As part of his itinerary, Jaishankar is set to meet the leadership of Portugal, members of the Portugal-India Parliamentary Friendship Group, and the Indo-Portuguese and Indian communities residing in Portugal, as outlined by the Ministry of External Affairs.
Following his visit to Portugal, EAM Jaishankar will embark on a bilateral visit to Italy from November 2 to 3. During this visit, he will meet with Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Minister of Defence, and Minister for 'Made in Italy,' and engage with the top leadership of the country.
According to the MEA release, he will also address the Joint Session of the Senate's External Affairs and Defence Commission, EU Affairs Commission, and the India-Italy Parliamentary Friendship Group. Furthermore, he will meet with members of the Indian community during his visit to Italy.
The relationship between India and Italy is characterized by friendly and cordial ties, encompassing multifaceted bilateral cooperation. This relationship reached the status of a 'Strategic Partnership' during the state visit of the Prime Minister of Italy in March of the same year.
