British King Charles III is scheduled to make his inaugural official visit to the United Arab Emirates this December.
His visit coincides with COP28, the 28th edition of the Conference of the Parties summit, set to take place at Expo City Dubai from November 30 to December 12. During this historic visit, King Charles will play a pivotal role by delivering a welcome address at the COP28 opening ceremony on December 1. This invitation came directly from UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, highlighting the importance of the summit for global climate action.
In addition to addressing the summit, King Charles will participate in a reception to launch the COP28 Business and Philanthropy Climate Forum, which runs alongside the main event. This move demonstrates his commitment to engaging with key stakeholders in the fight against climate change.
Buckingham Palace, in a statement carried by Reuters, also revealed the monarch's intention to hold meetings with regional leaders during his stay in the UAE.
This marks King Charles' third appearance at a COP summit, underlining his passion for addressing climate change. Previously, in his capacity as Prince, he delivered opening speeches at both COP26 in Glasgow and COP21 in Paris. Notably, the King has a history of visits to the UAE, with his first official visit in 1989, followed by visits in 2007 and 2016, when he was accompanied by Camilla, Queen Consort.
COP28, a cornerstone event in the fight against climate change, gathers world leaders to collaborate on solutions for pressing global environmental challenges. The importance of King Charles III's presence at this year's summit underscores the significance of international cooperation in combating climate change.
