Kuwait's Catholic community is wrapping up a year-long celebration marking the 75th Jubilee of the Church of Our Lady of Arabia, the Gulf country's inaugural Catholic church. The Diamond Jubilee festivities commenced on December 11, 2022, and will culminate on Friday, December 8, coinciding with the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Bishop Aldo Berardi, Apostolic Vicar of the Vicariate, will lead a solemn Liturgy attended by Archbishop Eugene Martin Nugent and Father Michael Fernandes OFM, among other clergy.
The Church of Our Lady of Arabia originated in an old power plant in al-Ahmadi, transformed into a chapel in 1948. In 1952, the Kuwait Oil Company permitted the construction of a new church, with the foundation stone blessed by Pope Pius XII on September 8, 1955. The consecration to Our Lady of Arabia occurred in April 1956.
Despite low-key celebrations due to the conflict in the Holy Land, Kuwait's Catholic community reflects on the historical significance of its first church.
Additionally, the establishment of diplomatic ties with the Holy See in 1968 and the later establishment of the Apostolic Nunciature in 2000 highlight Kuwait's commitment to fostering interreligious dialogue and strengthening relations with the Vatican.
