Addressing pilgrims just days after Christmas, Pope delved into the scriptures and the insights of spiritual leaders to elucidate the importance of rooting out evil from its source.

Focusing on the perils of pride, Pope Francis turned to the Book of Genesis, unraveling the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Drawing parallels to the hidden and insidious nature of a snake, symbolizing temptation and sin, Pope highlighted the snake's cunning tactics. By sowing gossip and casting doubt on God's intentions, the serpent posed trick questions about the forbidden fruit, challenging the divine prohibition.

Explaining that the restriction on eating from the tree was a "measure of wisdom," Pope Francis clarified that it aimed to delineate human limitations rather than curtail the use of reason. He warned against the contemporary temptation to assert mastery over good and evil, identifying it as the "most dangerous pitfall for the human heart." These inclinations, he cautioned, could jeopardize closeness to the Lord and obedience to His loving plan.

Reflecting on the narrative of Adam and Eve,  Pope lamented their succumbing to the serpent's temptations, leading to the collapse of their idyllic life in Eden. Stressing that evil insidiously infiltrated human existence through subtle thoughts and nurtured doubts, he urged vigilance against the wiles of sin.

Pope Francis emphatically asserted that, when faced with temptation, dialogue with the devil must be avoided. Drawing inspiration from Jesus' response to temptation in the desert, the Pope emphasized the need to close the door to evil without engaging in dialogue. Quoting Jesus' reliance on the Word of God during temptation, he emphasized the importance of watching over one's heart.

Concluding his audience, Pope Francis encouraged followers to emulate the saints in guarding their hearts. He invoked God's grace for the wisdom to protect the treasure within, underscoring the constant presence of the Lord in this endeavor.
