New Delhi: The United States has underscored India's pivotal role in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, asserting that any path to peace "runs through India." This statement reflects India's growing geopolitical influence, particularly in its relations with Russia. However, this acknowledgment comes amid heightened trade tensions, as the U.S. maintains a 50% tariff on certain Indian imports, citing concerns over India's continued purchase of Russian oil.

U.S. officials have emphasized India's unique position to influence Russian President Vladimir Putin, urging New Delhi to leverage its longstanding ties with Moscow to advocate for an end to the war in Ukraine. The U.S. views India's diplomatic engagement as crucial in encouraging Russia to respect international norms and cease hostilities.

Despite recognizing India's strategic importance, the U.S. has imposed a 50% tariff on certain Indian goods, a measure aimed at pressuring India to reconsider its trade relations with Russia. The White House has justified this action as a means to exert secondary pressure on Moscow by targeting its allies' economic activities.

Peter Navarro, a trade adviser to President Donald Trump, has been particularly vocal, accusing India of acting as a "laundromat for the Kremlin" by purchasing discounted Russian crude oil, refining it, and reselling the products at global market rates. Navarro argues that this practice not only undermines international sanctions but also prolongs the conflict by enabling Russia to fund its military operations.

In response, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has defended the country's stance, emphasizing that India's economic relations with Russia are driven by energy security needs and are not intended to undermine international efforts to resolve the conflict. Jaishankar reiterated that India's ties with the U.S. remain "very invaluable," but asserted that New Delhi should not be intimidated into altering its foreign policy decisions.

Amid these tensions, China has expressed strong support for India, opposing the U.S. tariff measures. Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, stated that China "firmly opposes" the U.S. tariff move and supports India's stance on the matter. This declaration underscores growing cooperation between China and India amidst increasing global trade tensions, particularly around U.S. policies under the Trump administration.
