Vatican City: During the midday Angelus on the first Sunday of Advent, Pope Francis invited the faithful to lift their eyes to heaven and open their hearts to the Lord, who provides strength and carries our burdens throughout life’s journey.
Reflecting on the Gospel reading, the Pope highlighted Jesus’ message about cosmic upheavals and humanity's fears and anxieties. Amid these challenges, Jesus offers hope, urging His disciples to "stand up and raise your heads" as the time of redemption draws near.
Pope Francis explained that Jesus' primary concern was to prevent His disciples’ hearts from becoming "drowsy" with worldly distractions and burdens. He encouraged them to remain vigilant, awaiting the coming of the Son of Man with trust and faith.
The Pope acknowledged that many of Jesus' contemporaries faced persecution, wars, and natural disasters, leading to widespread fears about the future. However, the Lord offered a perspective of hope, reminding them of God’s plan for salvation even amidst historical turbulence. By turning their gaze to heaven, they could contextualize their struggles and find solace in the divine promise.
This message, Pope Francis emphasized, is equally relevant today. He urged believers to examine their own lives, asking whether their hearts are weighed down by worries or whether they have the faith to look upward, trusting in the Lord’s love and care.
“When anxieties close us off and burden our hearts,” the Pope said, “Jesus calls us to lift our heads, trust in His love, and make room for Him in our lives, rediscovering hope and renewal in His presence.”
Concluding his reflection, Pope Francis prayed that the Advent season would serve as a time to refocus on the Lord, who lightens hearts and sustains us on our path.
