Doha: India's Foreign Minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, emphasized that BRICS nations have no intention of diminishing the U.S. dollar's influence. His comments, made during an event in Doha, came a week after U.S. President-elect Donald Trump urged BRICS countries—comprising major emerging economies like India, Russia, and China—not to create or support an alternative currency to replace the dollar.
Trump warned that failure to comply would result in 100% tariffs. Despite growing discussions within BRICS about reducing dependence on the U.S. dollar in global trade, Jaishankar’s remarks reaffirmed the group's stance on not undermining the dollar's central role in the global economy.
