As Tall as a Five-Story Building: The World's Largest Nativity Scene Returns to Spain

Madrid: Spain’s record-breaking Nativity scene, officially recognized as the world’s largest by the Guinness Book of World Records, has returned for public viewing. This year’s display, which began on December 7, is hosted in Alicante’s Espacio Seneca, a departure from its traditional location at Town Hall Square due to ongoing renovations. The inauguration ceremony featured a musical performance and took place at 6 p.m. at the Rambla-Explanada intersection.

Towering as high as a five-story building, this monumental Nativity scene first gained global recognition in 2019 as the tallest of its kind. In 2022, with the inclusion of the Three Wise Men figures, it also earned the title of the largest Nativity scene in the world. The scene’s central figure, baby Jesus in the manger, measures an impressive 3.32 meters tall, 3.31 meters wide, and 4.48 meters long.

The colossal statue of Saint Joseph stands at 18 meters in height, with a width of 4.70 meters and a length of 3.07 meters. Beside him, the Virgin Mary’s figure rises to 10.59 meters, measuring 3.49 meters in width and 4.28 meters in length. For perspective, a person of average height, approximately 1.70 meters, would barely reach the ankles of Saint Joseph's statue.

This extraordinary Nativity scene is the work of local artist José María García, whose craftsmanship has transformed the display into a cherished symbol of Alicante’s festive season and a marvel for visitors worldwide.
