Pope to Manos Unidas: Mary is the model for your mission

Vatican City: Pope Francis commended the “feminine genius” that drives the efforts of Manos Unidas in addressing hunger, poverty, and lack of education in developing countries. In a special greeting on the 65th anniversary of the organization's founding, the Pope acknowledged the unique qualities of sensitivity and resilience inherent in women, which are reflected in Manos Unidas' work to promote progress across the globe.

He explained that Manos Unidas (the “Catholic Committee for the Campaign Against World Hunger”) was born in response to a 1959 appeal from the FAO, calling for action to address the “hunger for bread, culture, and God” experienced by much of the world’s population. This appeal was met by the women of Catholic Action in Spain, who saw it as a call to action to combat these pressing issues.

Reflecting on the organization’s work, Pope Francis drew inspiration from the figure of the Blessed Virgin Mary, calling her the “Woman par excellence,” and the ideal model of humanity. He emphasized that through Mary’s example, all can contribute to the world’s betterment. The Pope highlighted that Manos Unidas' mission, carried out by mothers, daughters, and wives, mirrors the same compassionate and determined spirit found in Mary.

The Pope noted that the organization's focus on fighting hunger, poverty, and lack of education—fueled by compassion and resilience—would not be possible without a Christian understanding of humanity, grounded in the Gospel and the Social Doctrine of the Church.

Pope Francis concluded by encouraging the members of Manos Unidas to continue their “beautiful mission of voluntary service and aid,” while inviting them to take part in the upcoming Jubilee Year as “pilgrims of hope.” He urged them to contribute to both the material and spiritual advancement of the most vulnerable.

He also expressed his best wishes for Advent, hoping that the season of anticipation for God’s promises would lead to a spiritual renewal that would contribute to the building of a “civilization of love.”
