Punjab police detained a group of farmer leaders in Mohali on their way to the Shambhu border protest site after clashing with security forces. The detained leaders included Sarwan Singh Pandher and Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who had just concluded a meeting with a central delegation led by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.
Authorities also cleared protesting farmers from the Punjab-Haryana Shambhu and Khanauri borders, dismantling temporary structures and detaining several demonstrators. Punjab Minister Harpal Singh Cheema defended the action, stating that the government aimed to reopen the borders.
"We want to clear the Shambhu and Khanauri borders. The farmers’ demands are directed at the central government, so their protest should take place in Delhi or elsewhere, not by blocking Punjab’s roads," Cheema asserted.
Farmers had been camping at the border after being stopped from marching to Delhi with their demands. The crackdown drew sharp political reactions.
Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi denounced the detentions as an "attack" on the agricultural sector. Shiromani Akali Dal leader Daljit Singh Cheema also condemned the move, calling it an "undemocratic and illogical betrayal" of farm leaders. He demanded an explanation from Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann regarding the arrests.
"This incident has exposed the collusion between the Union government and the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government. We demand the immediate and unconditional release of all detained farm leaders," Cheema declared.
Meanwhile, the meeting between the central delegation and the farmers ended without a resolution. Agriculture Minister Chouhan, however, described the talks as having taken place in a "very positive environment."
