A heated controversy has erupted following the Forest Department’s removal of a cross installed by St. Thomas Church in Thommankuthu.
Fr. Johnson Palackal CMI has responded strongly to the issue through his youtube channel, Positive Stroke. As the Catholic Church approached Holy Week, the uprooting of the Cross by the Kerala Forest Department—originally installed by the parishioners of St. Thomas Church in Thommankuthil—has caused deep pain in the hearts of Keralite Christians, in a state that has long been seen as a symbol of religious and communal harmony.
"The Forest Department, which seems to be trying to turn Kerala into one large forest, has committed an act of blasphemy," contended Fr. Johnson Palackal.
The cross had been erected along the Thommankuthu–Anachadikkut road and was reportedly completed late Friday night. However, by Saturday afternoon, it was dismantled by Forest officials, despite vocal opposition from parishioners. Authorities justified the move, stating the cross was on forest land, as confirmed during a recent joint survey. The Kaliyar Range Officer further stated that legal proceedings will be initiated against the church vicar for unauthorized installation.
Faithful, however, contend that the land has long been under the church’s possession and say they are prepared to present documentary evidence in court. Church leaders have vowed to pursue legal action and have called for a parish meeting to escalate their protest and determine further steps.
The incident has ignited a broader debate over land rights, religious freedom, and administrative overreach, with tensions expected to rise in the days ahead.
